Visiting SG Enable
As our topic was on Disability, we visited SG Enable Village at Redhill. There, we met Justin, who gave us a brief tour of their initiatives and demonstrated how their invention assists people with disabilities.
During the visit, we shared some of our initial project ideas (ie. a braille sensor on fingertips and an electroosmotic pump to display simple directions, aimed at alerting deaf individuals to their surroundings).
However, one project that stood out: our current initiatives targeting people with muscle degradation. Justin acknowledged that the idea could have significant impact. Though challenging, our team decided to take on this project.

User Research
(
After conducting more research and consulting with Dr Ho, we realised that we can broaden our target audience to include people with arm muscle weakness, rather than restricting it to those with muscular dystrophy.
He mentioned how his wife used to experience arm soreness after carrying their child for extended periods.
This prompted us to interview a young mother with a one-year-old baby. We discussed her challenges with prolonged child-carrying and invited her to test our prototype, which you can view under the “Usability Testing Report” tab.

During this phase, we identified a similar study: A textile exomuscle that assists the shoulder during functional movements for everyday life (Georgarakis, 2022)
We drew inspiration from this research while developing our own prototype.
