As a USP scholar, it is important for me to understand the various forces shaping our ever-changing world in all aspects, which requires me to not to confine myself to a single perspective, but to push beyond existing boundaries to examine issues from multiple angles. By travelling to Vietnam, I will be exposed to issues that are otherwise not as prevalent in Singapore, such as environmental degradation and poverty. I will also be exposed to different cultures from the diverse minority tribes in Vietnam, and observe how globalization has influenced its local culture. This is particularly relevant to Singapore, which is also trying to balance its western outlook with its unique heritage. Additionally, this will give me a chance to compare between China and Vietnam, which are both Communist and developing countries. There are issues faced by both countries, but how each of them reacts may be different and is thus interesting to look into.
Therefore, these first-hand experiences provide me with a fresh insight into the issues and challenges faced by developing countries, which is something I will not be able to gain from just reading the textbooks or online sources. Moreover, as education is not only about gaining knowledge, but also about developing and improving ourselves, by exposing myself to the real situation faced by the Vietnamese people, I can then better understand their needs and struggles, and thus empathize with them on certain issues, instead of merely judging them from a completely foreign and third angle. This empathy is essential for me to become a responsible global citizen, as I will then feel compelled to make a difference to their lives, for after all we are one community.
At a personal level, as I have not travelled to Vietnam before, this will be an amazing opportunity to immerse myself in its unique culture. As my group is doing the impact of globalization on the food scene in Vietnam, I hope to speak to the locals from all walks of life to understand their opinions on the issue. It would be interesting to observe a diversity of perspectives on a single issue, which can in turn broaden my own perspective. Also, it has been some time since I last climbed mountains. It is always enjoyable to take in the amazing scenery and the hurling, chilling mountain wind.
