In less than a month, all of us will be leaving to Vietnam for TOPS. Though it may be just a brief six days, I am nonetheless excited for what is to come. As a USP student, I think that this trip is an excellent opportunity to make an impact on the world, no matter how small. My group is going to research and document the topic of gender stereotypes in Vietnam, which I feel is a meaningful area of study often easily overlooked in societies all over the world. Often, we are aware that this issue exists and persists even today, but many are often already desensitised towards this topic due to overexposure from the media. Gradually, many of us fall victim to complacency and assume that the issue is no longer as crucial or serious anymore. Otherwise, we may even have adopted the misconception that “someone else” is already doing something about this matter and so there is no need for us to step in. This, however, is far from the truth. While substantial progress has undoubtedly been made, there is still a lot more that can be done. Hence, I feel that this overseas trip will allow me to fulfil my purpose as a USP student to do what is within my capability and give back to society. It is an opportunity and privilege that I am graced with, and hence should put to full use.

Apart from the academic aspect of this trip, I am also looking forward to the intercultural exchange experience. Often, it is through travelling and stepping out of one’s comfort zone to discover new things that broadens one’s horizons. As we gain deeper understandings of the world and its different cultures, we enrich our mind and grow to become more accepting and open-minded individuals. Character development in this aspect is especially important in today’s world, as we become increasingly interconnected on an international scale. Gone are the days where people stay put in just one country for their entire lifetimes; interactions today are across the globe.

On a more personal level, I do just want to relax and unwind in the beauty of Sapa’s greenery. As one more inclined toward the Arts, I am excited to travel as this always gives me inspiration and new insights. It is nice to get away from the noise of everyday life in Singapore for a while and enjoy some cold air too.
