SG Cares is a nationwide volunteerism movement by Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). The movement aims to harness the goodwill of Singaporeans, inspire them to step forward, and support them to help others in need. It will focus on increasing volunteerism opportunities, coordinating partnerships, and building capabilities of volunteers and organisations through training.

SG Cares will be led by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and the National Council of Social Service.

In the Committee of Supply debate speech for MCCY, Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, gave special mention to Ms Siti Nurani Salim, founder of Project Goodwill Aid, which runs volunteer activities such as distributing groceries and refurbishing homes for families in rental flats.

Other initiatives by MCCY to promote volunteerism includes:

  • Inaugural Youth Corps Service Week (11 March – 18 March 2017) which will encourage the young to contribute to social and community causes, and it will comprise of volunteering activities held islandwide;
  • Nearly 40 ground-up projects that build national identity or help the community have been supported by Our Singapore Fund launched in 2016, and this has benefited more than 37,000 people;
  • Promoting corporate giving through NVPC’s Company of Good programme, which has attracted more than 470 members. Two new schemes (“Champion of Good” and “Company of Good Fellowship”) of the programme will be introduced later this year, which aims to encourage corporate givers.
