According to the United Nations, 10 per cent of the world’s population lacks access to safe drinking water. Every day, approximately 3,000 children die from diarrheal diseases linked to contaminated water.
To combat this problem, French engineer Jean-Paul Augereau designed The Safe Water Cube, a water purification system. The 1.2 metre cubed stainless steel container has five different filters that can make all surface water drinkable.
It is able to destroy “all the viruses and bacteria responsible for diarrhea, dysentery, cholera and hepatitis, without destroying the minerals in the water” purifying up to 1000 litres per hour without electrical energy.
Despite what it can do, the fountain only costs about 5,500 euros and is financed by NGOs, private donations, local businesses and authorities.
