Project 3

Advanced Hybrid Energy Storage Systems

The technical objective of Project 3 would be to build an advanced HESS with solid-state transformer (SST) interfaces to improve the dynamic performance of the energy storage system used in the microgrid and to reduce the overall system schedule/operating cost.

A HESS will be investigated, which will combine different types of typical energy storage sources. In particular the combination of batteries and ultracapacitors through the solid state transformer (SST) interfaces is proposed as shown in Fig.4. Combining the advantages of different types of energy storage components, HESS will possess a higher level capability for managing power flow and improving power quality when supplying electrical energy to dynamic loads. Through optimal power scheduling solutions of HESS, the HESS will be more cost-effective than the single-type storage system. Besides the dynamic load-matching capabilities, some other HESS applications such as PV power smoothing, system transient recovery and microgrid islanding support will be explored.
