The Sumatran elephant’s status on International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List 2017 is listed as critically Endangered and this status was uplisted from “endangered” to “critically endangered” in 2012 after the Sumatran Elephant lost nearly 70 per cent of its habitat and half its population in a single generation.



So what is it that has caused the endangerment of the Sumatran Elephants? In this section, we will be looking at some threats that the species faces:

  3. Ivory Poaching
