Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC)

A major threat faced by the Sumatran Elephant species as listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species website is the conflicts that the Sumatran Elephants have gotten into with humans as a result of the transformation of forests into human settlements and agricultural regions. The human-elephant conflict stems from habitat loss and fragmentation and poses a problem for elephant conservation as well as human welfare as there is competition between humans and elephants for land space.

As human population continually increases, this encroaches on the elephants’ shrinking habitat causing elephants to often come into contact with humans which could trigger human-elephant conflicts.
