Hello! I am Yan Yu and am currently a Year 2 Psychology Major in Nanyang Technological University.
My interest in the environment and wildlife did not really develop till I was 15 years old. It all started with my now-17-years-old dog, who has been my companion and my only ‘sibling’ since I was 4 years old. Admittedly though, I have never paid much attention to her after the initial ‘cute puppy phase’ was over. But it all changed when I was 15 and I started to realise what a soulful and loyal four-legged companion she is. That realisation really opened my eyes to the wonders of the non-human elements around us and that they are not as soulless and ‘dead’ as we thought them to be. And thus this marked the start of my journey to discover more about myself and the world around me.
The reason why I have decided to do my blog project on John Muir was because I was intrigued by the fact that he is the main reason why Apple Mac users (which constitutes a relatively large portion of all laptop users) are able to enjoy having the breathtaking picture of the Yosemite on our laptop screens, and yet only a fraction knows about him and his contributions. The aim of this blog is to give readers a brief introduction to the life of the Father of National Parks, the factors that could have influenced his actions and worldviews, as well as his contributions and achievements as an environmentalist.
