Cognitive Restructuring

Turning Eco-Grief into Positive Life Strategies – 4 Key Points to Turn Eco-Grief Around.

  1. Cognitive Restructuring

Cognitive appraisal involves how a person interprets a stressor and the resources the person would use to deal with it.  Reappraising the environmental crisis can help in alleviating the source of the stressor from a less-emotional stressful perspective. It can allow the person to see the situation from a different perspective. This involves the use of cognitive-behavioural therapy – it focuses on treating maladaptive behaviour (i.e. rumination over the logging of trees in Ghost Valley) by changing both cognitions and behaviour that could cause emotional arousal. Cognitive-behavioural therapy can also change both mental and behavioural responses to an environmental loss. It assists people to be on the path of finding a more constructive way to problem-coping approach.
