In 2009, the International Training Workshop on Asian Otter Research and Conservation was conducted in Cambodia.

The workshop aimed to garner interest and raise awareness for the support of protection and conservation of otters and establish research capacity in Cambodia. It was organized by Conservation International, funded by international NGOs (International Otter Survival Fund, Asian Otter Trust, Rufford Foundation and Twycross Zoo UK) and supported by the local government authorities (Cambodian Forestry Administration, Fisheries Administration and Ministry of Environment).

The eight-day workshop was considered a success, creating a group of future otter researchers, as government appointed officers and students from various universities in Cambodia were successfully trained in otter field research and conservation methods by local and international otter researchers. Research proposals developed by students were selected and research grant was given for the proposed studies, which will contribute to the future planning of conservation efforts for otters.
