Chinese Government

One of the most important factors in the success of panda conservation is The Chinese Government.

WHY PANDAS?

The Chinese government has been very concerned over the plight of the panda, more so than for any other animal.

This happens for a few reasons:

  1. Pandas are important tools for diplomacy

Surprisingly, pandas were once hated in China and viewed as monstrous beasts, as deadly as any predator. However, when pandas became really popular with Westerners around the 1940s,, the Government changed their attitudes. Now, instead of vicious beasts, pandas became national treasures, heavily valued for their appeal to other nations. In fact, the diplomatic value of the panda was so high that it was even chosen to become China’s national animal and represent it to the world.

Nowadays, pandas are used as bargaining chips in China’s trade agreements with other nations (Refer to Panda Diplomacy)

2.   Pandas are good for national image

As mentioned before, pandas are cute to an amazing extent. Their entire demeanor brings to mind babies and stuffed toy, creating a warm and friendly feel. This positive feeling is something China wants to be associated with as it would help China build better bilateral relations.
