Wangari Maathai had numerous awards throughout her life. Other than the Nobel Peace Prize she received in 2004, here are a few prestigious awards presented to her.
- 1991 – Goldman Environmental Prize
- 1992 – Hunger Project‘s Africa Prize for Leadership
- 1993 – Edinburgh Medal for “Outstanding contribution to Humanity through Science”
- 1997 – Elected by Earth Times as one of 100 persons in the world who have made a difference in the field of environmentalism
- 2006: Légion d’honneur (highest French order of merit for military and civil merits)
- 2007: Indira Gandhi Prize
Two Honorary degrees
- 2006 – Doctor of Public Service by the University of Pittsburgh
- 2013 – Doctor of Science by Syracuse University (posthumously)
