Impacts on tourism

Beaches inevitably have to be closed whenever they are affected by an oil spill. Not only is the smell of petroleum unbearable, the oil sightings on the beaches are unpleasant as well. This will shun tourists from the beach areas and shorten their time there. Singapore is a tropical area that is famous for her beaches. Since Singapore relies heavily on tourism as one of our pillar of economic support, such disruptions to beach operations will hurt our revenue.

In 2014, the oil spill near Kusu and St John’s island affected the beaches. Similarly in 2017, Changi Beach, Pasir Ris Beach, Punggol Beach, and Noordin Beach at Pulau Ubin were all affected.
