Legislation

Some environmental change in Singapore happens because there are legislation in place. This concept is not foreign to anyone, especially for those who live in Singapore. Violation of the rules put in place are expensive, and this makes such legislation to ensure environmental behavior to be successful.

This applies to oil spills as well. There have been legislation put forth to have oil shipowners liable for the oil discharged or escaped from their tankers. They are liable for “(1) damage caused in Singapore by the contamination; (2) cost of reasonable measures to reduce the damage; and (3) damage caused in Singapore by any such measure” (Chan, 2005). Shipowners are also not spared when it comes to imminent threat of contamination. Such shipowners are also liable to any costs from preventive measures taken within Singapore boundaries (Chan, 2015). This puts pressure on the companies to be more careful during oil transportation. Hopefully with such implementations, human errors as well as oil spills will happen less often.
