5 Love-the-Earth Acts for Every Singaporean Student

1: Stop Dabao-ing!

Eat at canteens, or bring your own reusable containers when taking out food. Dabao-ing (taking out food) in single-use disposable containers can use up a lot of plastic containers and create a lot of plastic waste without you noticing. If you stay in hall and eat 2-3 meals in school everyday, you could use up to 14-21 disposable food containers every week alone!

Furthermore, it is also more beneficial to your health as reusable food containers are usually BPA-free, and they could help save money in the long run! 14-21 food containers per week can add up to $2.80-$4.20 per week!

2: Print only what you need

Think twice before printing notes. Print only those which are really needed in hardcopy, this could help reduce a lot of paper waste. Use your laptops or tablets in class. They make searching for certain themes or concepts much easier – you could just type a search word in the search bar. Furthermore, it would also be potentially lighter in weight!

3: Use pen refills

Use pen refills instead of buying brand new pens. This can help reduce a lot of plastic waste as well.

4: Don’t buy PET bottled drinks

Use reusable water bottles for water, or drinks that can be drawn from a dispenser.  If you would like packaged sweet drinks, choose drinks in paper cups or paper cartons if possible.

5: Don’t waste food

Reduce food waste by only asking for and buying the amount that you need. This can help reduce food waste which is difficult to dispose of in waste management, and not waste the food as a precious resource.

Make cleaning up easier for the janitor uncles and aunties in school too!
