Captive Breeding and Husbandry

Captive breeding and husbandry is an example of ex-situ conservation technique. The goal of ex-situ conservation is to conserve and protect endangered species outside of its natural habitat.

Captive breeding and husbandry is a programme initiated to create, maintain and sustain a healthy population of the Singapore freshwater crab. Moreover, it can aid researchers in identifying successful biological, demographics and habitat indicators in breeding Singapore freshwater crab. The technique also allows for future relocation of the species to wild habitat.

A captive breeding ex-situ facility for the Singapore freshwater crab is currently located at Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS).

Treading on a path of uncertainties to wildlife threats, captive breeding and husbandry provide hope and optimism in the wildlife conservation of this species.
