Food

Giant clams are food sources to many animals either for their meat or expelled materials (faeces, gametes and pseudofaeces). Some reef fishes would peck on the mantles of the giant clams while others feed on the nutrient-rich faeces and expelled zooxanthellae. It was found that at least 75 predators such as pufferfishes, wrasses and triggerfishes, prey on both the juvenile and adult giant clams.

Even when they die, they would attract small invertebrates scavengers such as isopods and snail. Hence, the giant clams not only increases biodiversity but contributes to the nutrient cycle too.
