Loss of Coral Reefs

Land reclamation would mean a loss of coral reefs as the new land areas reside along coastal shorelines. Taking Singapore as an example, more than 60% of their coral reefs are gone due to land reclamation. With a decrease in coral reefs, the area available for some burrowing species of the giant clams (for example, Tridacna Crocea) to grow on and in the coral reefs will decrease. This would then threaten the population of the giant clams that live in the reefs.
