Government

I want to inform you about the general things the Government may think of to protect the Coral reefs.

The government is one of the most important factors to fight against the multiple threats to protect the coral reefs. The government should take her responsibility to introduce new restrictions and laws against the coral threats, particularly the local threats caused by humans. The government should communicate with local communities, companies and the inhabitants to maintain the rules and work together to accomplish the conservation goals.

The coastal development should be under control of the government. In this way they can enforce the focus on sustainability and keep an eye on the development of new settlements around coastal areas.

Pollution is a complex threat and takes many forms, it is difficult to directly reduce the pollution. The government should therefore focus on managing the human activities such as improving the agriculture, protecting the forest and innovate oil spill solutions. Small improvements will immediately reduce the erosion, nutrient and sediment impacts.

The government can implement rules around the fishing industry to keep a balanced ecosystem. First of all it is important to register the fishers, this provides information of the amount of fishers and their motivation. The government can introduce fixed time periods for authorised fishery, like fishing seasons, in this way species have time to restore their population. If a specific specie is in great danger the government can decide to protect them by make it illegal to catch them or set a catch limit. As I said before, some fishing methods can destroy the coral, those methods are already illegal in many countries. However, the government should control this by regular inspections.
