Threats

When you look at Coral you can see the complex structures are very fragile, that’s why Coral is extremely vulnerable for threats. As said before the Coral live in symbiosis with algae. They need eachother to survive, the perfect circumstances needed for a healthy coral growth are the presence of enough sunlight and low amount of nutrients. If one of those elements are removed, this can have enormous consequences for the Coral development. Moreover, this will unbalance the whole ecosystem.

Nowadays, the coral reefs are in danger due to a variety of threats. Those threats are due to the human pressure on coral reefs and can be categorized by their type of origin, either local or global. Human activities near the Coral reefs which affects the Coral directly is known as local threats. The global threats are more indirectly caused by activities of the entire human population like the impact of the climate change and global warming. Those threats are more complex and are affecting the Coral area not immediately but in a slower pace. I will describe each threat individually in greater detail in their corresponding tabs.

Local threats:

  • Costal development
  • Pollution & Damage
  • Overfishing

Global threats:

  • Warming seas
  • Acidifying seas
  • Storms
