Manufacturing and Processing Industries.

1. Adding Value to Agriculture Waste

Instead of simply tossing aside food trimmings, manufacturers can instead turn them into other useful products. This reduces food waste and increases profit. One example would be when tomatoes are used in canned foods. The unused parts, such as seeds and the skin, can serve as a source of Nitrogen and other nutrients, essential in high quality fertilizers. In California, 10,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich compost are produced from tomato waste yearly.

2. Standardized food date labels

To enhance consumers understanding of food labels, date labels on food packaging should be standardized, clear and easy to understand. Manufacturers should also make an effort to explain what exactly these date labels mean (e.g. through educational campaigns or advertising). In the U.K., studies have shown that these strategies (i.e. standardized labels and public education) can cut 20% of the total food wastage by consumers.
