Case Study of Hong Kong

POOR PLANNING?

Alike Singapore an New Dehli, Hong Kong is a high-density urban zone. Most of the noise in Hong Kong, however, comes from its poor planning. Before 1998, the airport in Kai Tak caused citizens to suffer the full brunt of aircraft noise, poor planning of congested streets also left residents to suffer from noisy traffic. In recent times, complaints about the noise are still piling, increasing from about 15000 complaints in 2013 to 44000 complaints in 2016. This shows that more people are being affected by the noise now.  The noise pollution problem in Hong Kong has reached a point where the government is encouraged to reduce the damage done. Fortunately, there are improvements in managing construction and traffic noise due to comprehensive noise maps made. These noise maps allow relevant authorities to see the comprehensive picture of noise pollution in an area and effectively carry out actions to reduce the noise level.
