Urban Parks

Singapore being known as a “City in a Garden” has over 400 parks and 600 community gardens. These managed nature areas create and support a social context surrounding the interaction with nature. It provides a platform for people to engage in a range of activities from sowing crops in the community gardens to engaging recreational and educational activities in the parks. One of the city’s most impressive garden is the Gardens by the Bay that reflects our natural heritage and cultural histories.

One of the approaches to further connect people with nature is the creation of Park Connector as it is an island-wide network of linear parks that connects parks and residential areas around Singapore. One example of the park connectors is the West Loop Connector Park which connects 8 smaller parks – Choa Chu Kang Park, Bukit Panjang Park, Zenghua Park, Diary Farm Nature Park, Bukit Batok Nature Park, Pang Sua Park, Limbang Park and Little Guilin.

A photo taken at Coney Island with my friends

Through my own experience, I enjoy visiting the parks especially with my friends. One of the frequently visited nature park is Coney Island. The first time I visited Coney Island was in 2015 when it just opened to the public. During that visit, the crowds flooded into the Coney Island. I felt that the crowd was slightly disturbing the tranquil setting in a nature area. However, it is still pleasant to see more nature lovers enjoying and appreciating the nature areas in Singapore.
