1. REFRAIN FROM EATING SHARKS FIN

One of the ways in helping to conserve whale sharks is to refrain from eating sharks fin. Our economy today runs on the basic economic principles of demand and supply- and since one of the major reasons for overfishing is due to the rising Asian market for whale shark fins and meat, we can reduce this demand by not consuming the product. Although Singapore’s role in contributing to the demand for shark fin is not as large as that of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, we are still major contributors that rank high on the list of countries that consume and import shark’s fin. If more and more people come on board to stop eating shark’s fin, slowly those who engage in whale shark fishing and finning would have very few markets to sell them to, thus decreasing their incentive to continue engaging in those practices.

  2. SUPPORT ONLY THE ETHICAL WHALE SHARK TOURISM PROGRAMS

Another way to help in conserving the whale sharks is by ensuring that you support only the places that carry out whale shark conservation in an ethical manner. As mentioned in the ecotourism section, whale shark tourism that is uncontrolled can can large amounts of stress in to the animals, doing them more harm than good. However, conversely, supporting the right ecotourism efforts can be very beneficial to the whale sharks. Of course, that also includes following and respecting the rules that are in place to protect the whale sharks when we do go whale shark watching or diving.

  3. DONATE!

Financial resources are always needed to fund research programs, and host events and campaigns to support this cause. You can be a part of the conservation efforts by funding various NGOs, both local and international, providing them with the resources they need to fund their projects and campaigns, making a change to the current situation.
