In the past 12 years, Singapore witnessed a 45% increase in the amount of food waste generated, and this number will continue in the years to come with a growing population. 719,000 tonnes of food was generated back in 2016, and that is equivalent to every single citizen throwing away two bowls of rice every single day! With earning its ugly reputation of being a food wasteland, food wastage issue in Singapore can be attributed to either too much food being wasted or too little of it being recycled. Only 14% of the food waste is recycled! Perhaps this is a result of the Singaporean’s indifference towards environmental damages caused by food waste that is further exacerbated by the “discretionary” attitude that food recycling entails. Inadvertently, the undesirable behavior of overconsumption of food consistently suppresses the right attitude that drives individuals towards proper food consumption and food recycling.

If having to create landfills to house the food waste first before it is sent for treatment of disintegration, that would take up the already limited land space that Singapore faces. So the fight against food wastage in Singapore has great importance due to the costs that are associated with wasting food.
