Population White Paper

The Population White Paper is a controversial paper released by the Singapore government in 2013 that explains its population policies for Singapore’s future.

The main points gathered from the Population White Paper are:

  • Projected increase of 1.6 million people from 2013 (average increase of 100,000 each year)
  • 30,000 new permanent residents and 25,000 naturalised citizens are needed each year to help aid Singapore’s population due to falling birthrates
  • Immigration and presence of foreign workers are justified as they help local businesses thrive

After the severe public backlash, the Population White Paper then contained amendments to leave out “population policy”, placing more emphasis on upgrading and investing in infrastructure.
