Illegal Wildlife Trafficking

Now that you’ve learnt about how PAMS Foundation came about, here are some of the contributions this foundation has made towards conservation. Let’s look at how Wayne and friends tackled wildlife trafficking in Tanzania.

They worked closely alongside the National and Transnational Serious Crimes Investigation Unit (NTSCIU) and Wildlife & Forest Crime Task Force (WFCTF), forming the National Task Force: Anti-Poaching. PAMS provide technical, logistical support along with vehicles, equipments, training and expertise to the task force. This allow the task force to take on the illegal poachers and traffickers in Tanzania.

By getting different units to work together, PAMS assisted in raising productivity in terms of producing results against poaching. Since then, there are significantly more arrests and reductions in poaching. On PAMS’ website, there is a counter to keep track of their progress.

One of their greatest arrests involve notorious ivory traders such as Boniface Mariango aka Shetani “The Devil”, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison in March 2017. Wayne also assisted in the capture of Chinese national and long-time resident of Dar es Salaam, “Ivory Queen” Yang Fenglan. She has been widely involved in ivory trafficking and wildlife crime in Tanzania for decades. For PAMS Foundation and Wayne, this was a great achievement! With these arrests, the lives of thousands of elephants are spared.

Wayne knew from experience that tackling the poachers alone will not be effective. He came up with the plan to infiltrate their villages and find out who paid these poachers to hunt for elephants. These witty tactics are how PAMS Foundation slowed down the rate of deaths of the elephants.
