Taxes & Laws

Taxing and providing regulations increases the cost of performing unwanted behaviour, such as using single-use plastic bags.

This allows for the regulation of behaviour to a sustainable level. For example, an island-wide plastic bag tax could be implemented to decrease the use of plastic bags. When the Japanese lifestyle brand Miniso imposed a 10 cents charge per plastic bag, single-use plastic bags dropped by 75%. Thus, this is a possibly useful way to regulate plastic bag usage and could be extended to other plastic packaging waste.
