The National Wildflower Research Centre (later renamed as the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center) was founded by Lady Bird Johnson, alongside with actress Helen Hayes, on Lady Bird’s 70th birthday, in attempt to improve the conservation and preservation efforts of the local plant species.

Even though the centre began as a private non-profit research organisation that was solely focused on the local species, the support from the public and donors had allowed the centre to be expanded into a major botanic garden with research facilities that are dedicated towards plant conservation, landscape restoration and sustainable approaches to landscape design. As a stakeholder who contributed significantly in terms of environmental and conservation efforts, the centre had received national recognition, and was awarded multiple awards for its efforts throughout the years.

Today, apart from ongoing research programmes and the provision of informations through its website, the centre also offers tours and programs that are catered to different age groups, thereby providing individuals with the opportunities to get closer in touch with the natural environment while being educated about it.
