Who is Sylvia Earle?

Born and raised in a small farm in New Jersey, Earle loved exploring the woods near her home. From a tender age, her respect and admiration for nature blossomed through her direct exploration in the neighbouring woods near her home.

At age 13, Earle and her family moved to Florida, where she lived near the waters, and this presented her with numerous opportunities to explore the marine animals living in the marshes and sea grass beds. It was through the lens of scuba diving which inspired her passion for marine life underwater. It was then that her love for the marine life started to flourish. Earle is a strong lover of the marine life, and she believes that the first step to understanding any ecosystem is to understand the vegetation. Thus, she chose botany as her undergraduate major.

Her adolescent days before leaving for university demonstrated the concept of biophilia, where she explored nature around her and later on, this love flourished and aided Earle in her future career in the research field. Her love for nature started young and this later led her to become such an accomplished and well-respected researcher.

Drawing similarities to Earle’s beginnings as a botany major, being a Psychology major right now can lead me to other places, in terms of careers, like how Earle later on became an oceanologist.
