Singapore

The Singapore Zoological Gardens (SZG) has its fair share of contribution to the conservation efforts of orang-utans by breeding 34 orang-utans in the zoo. In addition, orang-utans are also sent to other countries such as Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in hope of enhancing the gene pool of orang-utans as a species.

Here, 2 initiatives will be briefly touched on.

1. Provision of Equipment

The SZG provides ongoing support to the Nyaru Menteng Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo by donating veterinary supplies such as tranquilizers, dewormers, surgical equipment etc. The SZG donated a further $10,000 to help in the maintenance of the holding facilities and wages for the employees.

2. Singapore Flyer

SZG took its conservation efforts to the Singapore Flyer as well. It had graphic interactive panels illustrating the threats faced by the orang-utans. Keepers were also stationed onsite to interact and explain to people. The objective was to educate locals and tourists about the consequences of human activities on the orang-utans and to spread the conservation message.
