Evaluation of Current Interventions

Owing to the dire nature of the human-tiger conflict in Sumatra, it is essential that the idea of conservation be put forth convincingly- so as to change the very attitudes, values and motivations of the Sumatrans, which lie at the roots of their behaviors, and comprehensively. Much work has been done in this area, many organizations taking up the challenge to promote conservation and better alternatives. Among some of the more renowned organizations and initiatives are the WWF and the Wildlife Crime Unit (WCU). Owing to the lack of published and detailed information about many initiatives, this section on conservation shall focus more specifically on the activities of these two organizations.

Education

Education through the provision of relevant information is an important aspect of promoting conservation, as without proper knowledge on the implications of one’s actions or what can be done to alleviate the situation, it is almost improbable that a person would even consider changing for the better. Both the WWF and WCU recognize the importance of engaging the locals in its conservation efforts, and place education as one of their top priorities on the list. Extensive effort is invested at educating both the public and the private sector about the effects of their actions, as well as how to better handle the human-tiger conflict.

Mediums of Transmission

Complementary with their educational efforts, these organizations also employ the effective use of mediums. They recognize the ability of the media to provide quick and widespread diffusion of information, and actively works with the media to raise public awareness of the issue.

Modeling

In line with the media, the WWF tiger conservation initiative is endorsed by several public figures and celebrities which includes the likes of Leonardo Dicaprio, a board member of the organization for tiger conservation. These celebrities pledge their stand against the several inhumane acts carried out toward tigers, are actively involved in the provision of information, and display active uses of modeling by being directly involved in the conservation efforts. For example, Dicaprio has donated huge sums of money that goes directly toward anti-poaching efforts and the protection of critical tiger forests, to which Sumatra belongs. The following statement by Carter Roberts, CEO of the WWF Wildlife fund, appropriately summarizes this point about modeling:

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Leo. He cares deeply about the fate of tigers and the human communities with whom they share their habitat. He is committing his time, his wealth, and most importantly, his talent to this cause. His financial commitment will spark urgent on-the-ground conservation for tigers. His storytelling will inspire people around the world to help.”

Credibility of Information

The credibility of information provided to the public also goes a long way in changing their opinions and attitudes toward the issue. Both organizations recognize this, and therefore ensure that the information on which their programs are based are sound and credible. In both cases, one of the first involvements was in gathering extensive data, before they began outreach to the public.
