The most common phobia is Arachnophobia, the fear of spider. Next is Ophidiophobia, the fear of snakes. These common phobia are associated with human tendency to fear reptiles, insects and arthropods which is considered as the threatening aspect of the wilderness. Though the predisposition to fear for these animals have evolutionary advantages as it allows humans to effectively avoid harmful elements. However, this fear develops negativistic values in some people.

There are various reasons why humans develops phobia towards them. (or just dislike) First, because of our detachment with wilderness, we fail to understand more about them. Also, they look monstrous to many people. (media may contribute to this factor by portraying monsters as insect-looking creatures ) Plus, they are too small and expressionless which may mislead humans into thinking that they are mindless and emotionless animals.

This phobia may results in unreasonable fear and hatred towards these animals or even the general nature. Some even want to inflict excessive harm onto the animal they dislike, which is “specicide” – the elimination of the entire species.

However, phobia towards these animals can be reduced or cured with therapies. This depends on whether we have to take the imitative to resolve our conflict.
