Orangutan protection legal framework was first introduced in 1924. However due to the lax law enforcement, this legal framework and subsequent ones where not adhered to. The indonesian government does not place priority on conservation due to their crop-to-cash structure and it was not until recently did the government pay more attention to the conservation of the orangutans and the rainforest. The current system is not perfect, but it is a far cry from the previous ones where regulations are put down but not enforced.

There are a number of ways in which the dire situation of orangutans today can be helped. This section explores just a few organizations that have put projects in motion to ease the tension between human and wildlife, and also to maintain orangutan population.
