Why Is It Important For Businesses To Be Environmentally Friendly?

Businesses are one of the major contributors to environmental problems. A study found that if the world’s biggest corporations were to be held financially accountable for the environmental damage they cause, they would lose one thirds of their profits or more.

Some of the problems that businesses cause are:

  • The destruction of the ozone layer due to the production of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
  • Global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions from business activities such as transporting of goods
  • Unsustainable agriculture
  • Pollution
  • Strain on resources and wastage

Since they contribute to environmental problems on a fairly large scale isn’t it only fair that they help to curb it as well?

On a more positive note, an article published on Channel News Asia in April highlighted that more businesses in Singapore are integrating green features into their operations since they have greater awareness of long-term benefits associated with going green.

So what happens when popular organizations adopt green practices?

When popular organizations adopt green practices, it benefits the environment in a number of ways.

  1. Since these organizations usually operate throughout the country or the world, such measures help conserve the environment on a large scale.
  2. It spreads awareness to their consumers who may then begin adopting environmentally friendly behaviours in their own lives as well.
  3. Other businesses which see that consumers are supportive of such green behaviour might be encouraged to implement such methods into their operations as well.

This would all then collectively add up and greatly help in environmental conservation.
