Oil spills cannot be left unhandled at large in waterways, considering the detrimental consequences they can bring not only to the marine environment and life, as well as to the human dimension. Therefore, it has become the responsibility and obligation of those parties involved, as well as the countries innocently dragged into this problem, to take up operations of cleaning up the oil spills in the region. Clean-up efforts are often carried out by governmental institutions as well as non-governmental organizations since they are the ones with the capabilities, expertise and resources to do so.
