Rand Aldo Leopold was born in 1887 in Iowa. His childhood was filled with adventures in the wild natural world surrounding his home. He continued his love for nature and wildlife through his education, eventually earning a Master’s Degree in Forestry from Yale. Leopold thrived in the United States Forest Services and later at the University of Wisconsin. He published nearly 500 works in his lifetime, including the first ever textbook on wildlife management, Game Management, in 1933. His son, Luna, published his collection of ecological essays, A Sand County Almanac, in 1949, a year after Leopold’s death.
