Tragedy of the Commons

Vietnam has alot of coastal resources, as it is located just by the South China Sea. As a result, the local people turned to coastal sectors for their livelihood. The abundance of natural resources allowed for good returns and profits, leading to the local people continuing the practices for generations as the skills are being passed down.

As of July 1, 2013, the population of Vietnam was estimated at 92,477,857 and this makes up 1.3% of the world’s total population. The spur in demands and the changing environment also accelerates the decrease in health of the environment.

The people are unaware of the statistics or effects and continue to do what they always do, or even expanding their area of work so that they can gain more. Just consuming and not restoring the environment results in the lost of natural resources.

The community management has a lack of knowledge about their relationship with the environment. They depended on similar sectors for livelihoods and hence they agree with each others’ behaviours. Due to the fact that they are too involved in maintaining their livelihood, the resources that they used were being neglected.
