The Mangroves For The Future (MMF) aims to promote healthy coastal ecosystems with the help of both the community and the government.

It began in 2006 to help countries struck by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. These countries include: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In 2010, it expanded to include Pakistan and Vietnam.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami created an awareness of the importance of mangrove forests in helping to reduce the impact that the tsunami have on the coastal areas. In addition, the problem with the damage and degradation to these mangrove forests due to the peoples’ need for livelihood was also recognised. The MFF not only sees the value of the mangrove forests but all coastal ecosystems, including coral reefs, beaches, lagoons, wetlands and seagrass beds.
