The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the world’s leading NGO, and it has been working on orangutan conservation in partnership with local and international groups since the 1970s. Its efforts includes:

  • Conserving orangutan habitat by working with governments to help secure well-managed protected areas and wider forest landscapes to connect sub-populations of orangutans.
  • Engaging with timber companies to lessen adverse repercussions on habitats and orangutan populations. This is done by developing specific protection and management plans that they can compromise on.
  • Halting the illegal pet trade by working with TRAFFIC,  the wildlife trade monitoring network, to help governments enforce the laws that prohibit orangutan capture and trade. Orangutans are also rescued from traders and are brought to be rehabilitated.
  • Promoting ecotourism to generate financial support for orangutan conservation and bring economic benefits for those living nearby. This may strengthen the willingness of residents to protect these primates.
  • Reducing human orang-utan conflicts by working with governments, communities and plantation owners on practical methods to keep orangutans out of plantations, as well as regional land use planning to distance agricultural land use from orangutan habitats.
