Threats (Peninsula Malaysia):

  • Agriculture Land has been cleared for agriculture food and cash crops. This has caused elephants to recede from the south and west. Human-elephant conflict ensued.

 Solutions (Peninsula Malaysia):

  • Elephant Management Unit was set up in 1974 and they are highly specialised in elephant translocation in response of human-elephant conflict. This translocation policy has been successful in maintaining a healthy elephant population and reducing the conflict.

In another part of Malaysia – Borneo, elephants there were genetically different from their mainland counterparts. Borneo has large areas of forests, which are essential in sustaining the elephant population (Elephants in Malaysia, n.d.).
