Deforestation has disrupted their natural habitat and not forgetting that humans have quickly populated the valleys and plains. When these elephants lose their habitat, they are being pushed to unfamiliar and unsuitable places to live in. Moreover, fragmentation occurs when humans start breaking up habitat to build dams and plantations. As a result, the migration movements of elephants are being affected which divides the total population into even smaller isolated groups (Asian Elephants: Threats and Solutions, n.d.).

Moreover, a study conducted on large mammals in Southeast Asia proved that the decline in elephants’ population were greatly affected by infrastructure development. This was because elephants had wide-ranging movements and building infrastructure limits the area that they can move in (Steinmetz, Chutipong, & Seuaturien, 2006).
