There has been significant progress made over the past few years. Research has shown a decrease in adult mortality rates, and there is evidence of improved management in the ecotourism industry as well as the refinement of protocols. Implementations of alternative livelihood and sanitation projects at the villages near the core dolphin areas were successfully carried out.

Recent population studies by WWF and the Cambodian Government revealed that the species’ annual rate of decline has slowed from approximately 7% per year in 2007, to less than 2% in 2015. There is also distinctive improvement in the number of calves reaching adulthood.

In addition, there is high awareness of the Irrawaddy Dolphins’ mortality and declining population issue, both locally and nationally as this project managed to attract media and attention worldwide.
