One of the world’s most modern underground ammunition storage and the first large-scale underground container facility designed and constructed within a densely populated urban zone, Singapore’s Underground Storage Space was launched in 2008 by the SAF.
2. Critique of Impact
By building it below ground, an approximate 300 hectares of land has been freed up for more constructive use, presenting tangible benefits for land use planners.
Perhaps more importantly, in a boost for the environment, the granite caverns the ammunition facility is constructed in is capable of providing natural insulation, resulting in a 50% reduction in the energy required for cooling compared to a conventional depot.
