NGOs

The plastic manufacturing industry is a massive one that is economically driven. It would require a considerable amount of effort from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to convince these large companies that sustainable development is beneficial to their businesses in the long run as they are not able to regulate the actions of plastic manufacturing industries via laws and punishment.

The World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a NGO that aims to encourage consumers to choose eco-friendly and sustainable products and services such as products that can be efficiently recycled, contain less toxins, and will enable consumers to be in possession of the product for a longer period of time. This goal of WBCSD is becoming more achievable as many product developers and designers are turning towards sustainable product development. As consumers begin to choose more eco-friendly products, it will turn the plastic manufacturers to meet the needs of consumers and produce plastic products are readily recyclable.

Plastic Pollution Coalition is another NGO that is attempting to alleviate the plastic pollution of oceans. This NGO is more specialised, compared to WBCSD, in its operations as its purpose is to target plastic pollution. The Plastic Pollution Coalition is an alliance of individuals, organisations, businesses and policymakers around the world that aims to eliminate plastic pollution and to address its toxic effect on bio-organisms and their habitats. In the video below that can be viewed on the Plastic Pollution Coalition website, it catches the viewers’ attention with sexual behaviours but it carries an important message that affect human lives. This is one interesting way to generate awareness of the public in hopes of igniting their interest in conservation.

Most NGOs require funding, as they are not supported by governments financially, to conduct their activities that unite the people with similar goals to conserve the environment. NGOs are more focused on their conservation efforts albeit most of these organisations do not have as many members as the people working under governmental organisations. NGOs that are more specific in their mission are able to target the environmental issue with more focus and efficiency.

Next, individual efforts.
