SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION

Changes to lighting

With the increase in human activities on the beach, there have been an increase in the intensity of light on the shore near the waters. Strong lighting can interfere with the lives of the sea turtles.

It can deter female turtles from going ashore to nest, or if nesting does not take place at an optimal location, only a few hatchlings will be able to survive.

It will also interfere in the direction where the hatchling will go after it hatches as they tend to seek the light of horizon in the night. In the event where they waddle towards the beachfront lighting instead of the ocean, they may die from dehydration, fatigue, human activities and get preyed on by other bigger animals such as birds and crabs.
