SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION

How do they reproduce?

When it is time to nest, female sea turtles come on shore to lay their eggs and leave them alone. Usually they will choose to return to nest on the beach where they were born. Males on the other hand, do not go back onto land after they grow. Gender is determined by the temperature in the nest. After 45 to 70 days (depending on the species of sea turtles), the eggs are hatched and the baby turtles pick up cues to find their way into the water. They often meet with obstacles, and many do not survive because they are the targets of birds and fishes. Under natural conditions, only “one in a thousand will survive to adulthood”.
