National laws and Policy initiatives

Different countries have their own customized policies and regulations for the protection of sea turtles. Most of the species of sea turtles are listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in the United States and hence are under their protection. It will be illegal to harvest, poach or trade for consumption or to make related products for sale.

In the U.S., there are different agencies caring for the marine animals both on and off shore, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service. These agencies and many others work hand in hand to manage the ecosystem.

Endangered Species act in the United States

Endangered Species Act in the United States was established in 1973

In supporting the cause of protecting sea turtles at a national level, there are policies to manage the human-animal conflict. For example, in the United States, the Sea Turtle Conservancy had come up with the National and International Policy Program to raise awareness on a larger scale. Policies have been targeted to protect nesting areas, advocate proper fishing techniques and as a whole, develop solutions to tackle the problem.
