 Source of Livelihood

Indonesian fisherman in a traditional fishing boat known as Jukung. Indonesia.A fifth of the Acehnese people depend on fisheries for their livelihood. The 2004 tsunami destroyed coastal ecosystems and killed many traditional fishermen. The loss of a tribal fishing culture meant the loss of the knowledge passed down from one generation to another on tried-and-tested sustainable fishing methods. This opens an opportunity for over-extraction and exploitation.

See how the Acehnese embark on marine conservation efforts to reduce pressure on an already vulnerable coastal ecosystem.
